Guayusa powder BIO – Amazonian tea for energy and concentration

Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is an evergreen tree native to the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador and Peru. It is a relative of yerba mate and is often referred to as its “sister.” It has been traditionally used for centuries by indigenous tribes to make a tea that provides energy, alertness, and accompanies them on their night watches—hence the nickname “night watchman.”

Our organic guayusa powder is made from finely ground guayusa leaves, with no additives. Perfect for making tea, adding to smoothies, or as a naturally caffeinated alternative to coffee and energy drinks.

Main advantages and features

  • Natural source of caffeine - one cup of guayusa has approximately the same amount of caffeine as coffee, but has a milder and longer effect.

  • Supports energy and alertness - suitable in the morning, before work, study or sports.

  • Milder effect than coffee - less of an abrupt "kick", more stable energy.

  • Antioxidant and L-theanine content – guayusa contains bioactive substances that complement the effect of caffeine.

  • Unique taste - earthy, slightly sweet, with a slight hint of cocoa/chocolate.

  • Universal use - for tea, cold brew, smoothies, juices or even coffee or hot milk.

  • 100% natural ORGANIC product , without flavorings, colorings and sugar.

(It is not a medicine. Effects and perceived energy may vary by person and lifestyle.)

Origin and tradition

Guayusa grows naturally in the Amazon rainforest along the Amazon River in Ecuador and Peru.

Indigenous communities:

  • they drink guayusa in groups before sunrise,

  • they use it in rituals, ceremonies and joint meetings ,

  • They also perceive it spiritually – as a plant that supports communication with ancestors and inner alertness.

Unlike yerba mate, when harvesting guayusa, only the leaves themselves are harvested, without the stems. The result is pure leaf material, similar to "regular" green or black tea.

Taste and smell

The taste of guayusa is often described as:

  • gently earthy ,

  • slightly sweet ,

  • with a subtle cocoa-chocolate note ,

  • less bitter than yerba mate, guarana or classic green tea.

Thanks to the naturally present sugars in the leaf, the tea has a slightly sweet taste even without sweetening.

Guayusa can be flavored with:

  • a slice of lemon or lime ,

  • honey , agave or other sweetener,

  • a piece of ginger, cinnamon, mint or fruit.

How to use guayusa powder

1. Making tea (hot or cold)

Hot tea:

  1. 1 teaspoon of guayusa powder for about 200–250 ml of water.

  2. Pour hot water (not boiling) – ideally 80–90 °C.

  3. Steep for 3–5 minutes (with longer steeping, the taste may be more pronounced or slightly bitter).

  4. Sweeten and season to taste.

Cold brew:

  1. 1–2 teaspoons of guayusa to 250–300 ml of cold water.

  2. Let steep in the refrigerator for 4–8 hours.

  3. Strain and serve with ice, lemon or mint.

2. In smoothies, juices and drinks

  • Add ½ – 1 teaspoon to a fruit or vegetable smoothie, fresh juice or breakfast porridge.

  • Great when you want to add natural energy to your favorite drink.

3. In milk or coffee

  • You can mix guayusa into warm milk (cow's or plant-based) for a smooth, invigorating drink.

  • It can also be combined with coffee – as a way to slightly reduce the total amount of coffee but maintain energy.

Caffeine and its effect

  • An average cup (about 240 ml) of guayusa tea contains approximately 90 mg of caffeine – similar to a cup of coffee, more than black tea.

  • Thanks to the content of L-theanine and antioxidants, the effect is perceived as smoother and less "shaky" compared to classic coffee or energy drinks.

Guayusa is therefore a suitable choice for those who:

  • they want energy and alertness ,

  • but they are looking for something gentler and more natural than a classic energy drink.

Recommended use and dosage

  • Start with 1 cup per day (1 teaspoon of powder).

  • Depending on your tolerance and how you feel, you can increase to 2 cups per day.

  • Be careful, guayusa contains caffeine - it is not recommended in the evening before bed if you are sensitive to caffeine.

Health benefits and safety

Guayusa powder:

  • is rich in antioxidants and other bioactive substances,

  • can support a more energetic start to the day , concentration and alertness,

  • It is naturally plant-based, gluten-free and lactose-free .

Overall, it is a safe natural beverage as long as it is drunk in moderation – similar to coffee or black tea.

Important:

  • since it is a so-called novel food , it is advisable to consult a doctor if used regularly,

  • especially if you are taking medication, have heart or blood pressure problems,

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before consuming guayusa.

  • Drink guayusa drinks earlier in the day.

Warning

  • This product is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.
